Hamlet Soliloquies Essays - Fiction, Literature,

Hamlet Soliloquies In William Shakespeare's ?Hamlet? there are four major soliloquies that reflect the character of Hamlet. In this paper I will be analyzing and discussing how these four soliloquies reflect changes in Hamlet's mental state; his changing attitudes toward life and the other characters in the play, particularly the women; and his reflection on the task of revenge that has been assigned to him. These four soliloquies are the backbones of the play, and they offer the audience a glimpse into Hamlet's mind and thought processes. In the first soliloquy it is very obvious that Hamlet's sanity is in question. This is apparent in the first four lines of this soliloquy. ? O that this too solid flesh would melt, Thaw and resolve itself into a dew, Or that the Everlasting had not fixed, His canon ?gainst self-slaughter, O God! God!? (42) These few lines show that Hamlet is so depressed that he wishes he could melt away into nothingness or commit suicide. It is also very apparent in this soliloquy, that Hamlet is beginning to loath his mother for marrying Claudius only one month after King Hamlet's death. Hamlet loathes his mother and begins to loath all women, because he believes they are all weak. ?Let me not think on't! Frailty, They name is women!? (42) Hamlet seems to view Denmark as a metaphorical garden of Eden which now totally corrupt, this can be seen when Hamlet says ? Tis an unweeded garden, That grows to seed; things rank and gross in nature?. (42) This soliloquy presents the audience a glimpse into Hamlet's psyche, he is obviously enraged at his mother's marriage, the state of Denmark, and he is still mourning his father's death. The second soliloquy is very intriguing and it helps to set up many events that happen during the play. Hamlet is first wondering how an actor, who has no true emotional connection to the play was performing can seem to have such deep emotions; while he in reality is feeling unfathomable pain and anguish and he cannot due anything more than mope around depressed and rant and rave about his father's death. ?What's Hecuba to him, or he to Hecuba, That he should weep for her? What would he do, He the motive and the cue for passion, That I have.? (134) Hamlet doubts his own character and obedience to his father in this Soliloquy. He ponders whether or not he is a coward because he has yet to kill Claudius. ? But I am pigeon livered and lack gall, To make oppression bitter, or ere this, I should ha' fattee all the region kites, With this slaves's offal.? (136) During this soliloquy Hamlet contrives a plan to entrap Claudius so that hamlet can be totally sure that Claudius is guilty. ? I have heard, That guilty creatures sitting at a play, Have, by the very running of the scene, Been struck so to the soul that presently, They have proclaimed their malefactions, For murder, Though it have no tongue, will speak, with the most miraculous organ.? (136) This soliloquy is very important because it demonstrates Hamlet's anger at himself and Claudius, and how Hamlet intends to obtain the final piece of evidence about his father's death. He needs this evidence so he can be absolutely sure that Claudius killed King Hamlet. In the third soliloquy it is obvious that Hamlet is extremely depressed. Hamlet is seriously considering suicide but he wonders if death is worse then living. ?To die, to sleep; To sleep, perchance to dream - ay, there's the rub:? (142) Hamlet considers suicide throughout the play but when he gets close to doing it he finds an excuse not to. He wonders if death is more hellish than life, and asks why would humans go through all the pain and suffering that life has to offer, if they could end it all by killing themselves. ?For who would bear the whips and scorns of time, The oppressor's wrong, The proud man's contumely, The pangs of despised love, The law's delay, The insolence of office, and the spurns that patient merit of the unworthy takes, When he himself might his quietus make, With a bare bodkin (142,144)

About Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) Research Paper

About Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) - Research Paper Example Washington took his first opportunity to join a school for formal education in Hampton Institute and this led to his professorship and founding of the most famous African American learning institution in the nineteenth century, Tuskegee Institute. People saw Booker as having the status quo of the black American subordination from his speeches and writings indicated that the road to success for black Americans was only through achieving economic stability with the aid of education such as vocational training (Washington, 2010). Washington did not challenge any political system, protest or even claim about the issue of social fairness like his critics, W.E.B Du Bois and Frederick Douglass. He chose to focus on what Africans could accomplish mainly by concentrating on industrial skills because he believed these skills would help blacks to achieve economic stability. Booker felt that the rebellious rhetoric of his critics distracted the blacks from the road to accomplishment through econ omic success (Washington, 2010).... Fortunately, his mother acquired a Webster’s spelling book’s copy for him, which he vigorously studied. After convincing his stepfather, he did allow him to join a school for black Americans, although he still had to work in the salt mine before and after classes to cater for his family (Washington & Harlan, 2004). While working in the mines, Booker learned of a former slaves’ school, Hampton Institute. He left the work to join Hampton in 1872 after making enough savings to cater for him and his family (Gates & Jarrett, 2007). During his life in Hampton, he came up with his principles of industrial education. After graduation, he went back to Maiden where he worked as a teacher, but finally employed in Hampton as a staff member. In 1881, after recommendation by the founder of Hampton, he was requested to go and start up another industrial school in Alabama (Gates & Jarrett, 2007). Founding Tuskegee Institute Born into slavery, Booker experienced racial discrimina tion throughout his entire life. His desire and commitment to school, made him to be among the view black Americans who were educated, whereby he succeeded to become a teacher after his graduation (Gates & Jarrett, 2007). Believing in industrial education, Booker founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama when he was twenty-five years old. Booker believed that social racism was highly entrenched to extend that demanding immediate social equality would not be successful (Gates & Jarrett, 2007). The vision of his institute was to train black Americans to acquire skills that could help them the most. Tuskegee Institute eventually became an agricultural research institute center. One of the famous products of Tuskegee Institute was George Washington

Mental Health and Mental Disorders Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Mental Health and Mental Disorders - Essay Example He worked out Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. This author stated that emotions derive from "an interaction between events in the environment and beliefs and expectations which we have". (qtd in Clark, p. 130) Sometimes these beliefs are so powerful that they affect person's emotional conditional. The purpose of emotive behaviour therapy is to make these emotions less powerful and not badly influence person's emotional condition. (Clark). According to the concepts of cognitive theory, specialists counseling in mental disorders, should focus on mental condition of the client and investigate his identity, rather than treat his physical body with the help of medicines that may have side effects. Another famous author who worked in the field of cognitive therapy was Aaron Beck. He worked out a special methodology and strategies to treat depression and anxiety that were based upon the conceptions of cognitive theory. Clients are to perform a dialogue within his inner world to define the patterns that are to be changed to improve client's condition. Treatment strategies worked by Beck help a client to find out depressive beliefs and change his way of thinking. The commentators describe the essence of Beck's approach as following: "According to Beck and Emery, the way we process information is governed by structures called schemata. These schemata are made up of rules for explaining incoming information, and for retrieving what we have already learned. They are capable of exerting powerful effects on how we experience and relate to the world. For example, the schemata of a person with a social phobia cause them to become anxious and avoidant by explaining incoming information a nd memories in terms of social threat. Treatment consists of correcting faulty or illogical thinking by repeatedly confronting cognitive schemata with discrepant information from role-playing and homework assignments." (Abela, p.117) Modern medicine includes treating depression and anxiety with psychotherapy or medications, or combining both these treatments. The experiments and researches show that a combination of these two methods is mostly effective, especially because antidepressants rarely result in dependence. Companies that produce medicine encourage doctors to prefer medical treatment to psychotherapy, but there are cases in which referring to a specialist in psychotherapy is necessary. In case the person takes antidepressants and this brings no results, a visit to professional in mental health may be more effective. (Clark) Cognitive theory and therapy based upon it provide for a theoretical basis allowing specialists better understand the reasons for anxiety and depression to appear, to treat them effectively. This theory is regarded as effective even in comparison with other popular theories. To better understand the impact of cognitive theory into modern psychotherapy it is necessary to observe its perspective on mental illnesses and anxiety in particular. According to the cognitive theory, the reasons for depression, anxiety and worries appear due to several reasons: Sometimes it is enough just to see a model of behavior to take it over, when a person expresses intense fears or nervous condition. Sensitive people often answer such behaviour the same way. Sometimes a person inadequately estimates the situation and interactions with people

Pros and cons to open a small business Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Pros and cons to open a small business - Essay Example This discussion illuminates the many advantages and disadvantages of opening a small business then briefly discusses the merits involved in the purchase of an existing business as opposed to starting one from the ground up. For a person that embodies the true entrepreneurial spirit, the chief goal and appeal of opening a small business is to create something novel, not simply in managing someone else’s conception. Because of this, beginning a business of one’s own construct is an appealing notion (Helfand, 2007). Operating one’s own business can be advantageous in many ways. First, and probably foremost is that a person can be their own boss. They are therefore able to make their own decisions and set their own hours. Nobody admonishes the owner for being late or taking an extra day’s vacation. No one tells the boss where to be and when to be there. The owner of a small business answers to no one besides the customer and even this is a choice. Unreasonable clients can be fired. The owner is not involved in petty organizational politics. No one is trying to undermine your authority or accomplishments so as to ‘climb the corporate ladder’ quicker. The owner of a s mall business is and always will be at the top. There is no ceiling on earnings potential to the owner of a small business. It is the best way to realize the ‘American dream.’ The more the business succeeds, the more profit is made and the owner decides how to distribute the earnings. Gone are the days of working for a pre-determined salary knowing that efforts made were probably making money for invisible investors who didn’t have a clue about the business nor appreciated the tremendous sacrifices that allowed it to profit. The owner of a small business has the ability to develop particular skills and knowledge needed for the growth of that business instead of having to focus on only the constrained

Development of a Brand Image

Development of a Brand Image Introduction What is exactly Brand Image? Brand Image is defined as the face of a business. It is how you want the market or your audience to perceive the product, brand or service. It represents what the company believes in, values, services and ideas. It can generate audience loyalty and attract customers to your business. It Includes elements like logo, design, tagline etc. Brand identity for a start-up is one of the key elements in the present time because of the number of start-ups coming up in the market. Brand Identity is considered a key element because it can make you stand out from other businesses and your competitors. Advertising Campaign Detail Beard Oil came out with their first commercial video featuring the actor, Isaiah Mustafa. Mustafa quickly became Beard Oil Guy, and the brand capitalized on with an interactive video campaign in which Mustafa was a part of and actively participated with comments on Facebook and Twitter and other social media websites including short, personalized videos. In about two days, Our brand had churned out 186 personalized and quite funny video responses that too ft Mustafa responding to fans online. According to the data, these videos saw over 12 million views, and Beard Oil gained about 30000 Facebook fans and 58,000 new Twitter followers. We were sending sending mini TV commercials back to individual. Also the consumers that were personalized, and we were rapid-fireÂÂ   doing it on a rapid-fire basis, The creator creative director at that time was and a writer for the campaign, told Beard Oil Data. No one expects to ask a lot of question and then we can consider and then be responded to. I think thats where we broke through. We find that the campaigns gained momentum with most of the your fans and followers, do everything you really can to keep all ofÂÂ   them engaged while keeping your messaging true to your brands voice and image. Our campaign name is Beard Oil, Grow beard like a man What are the takeaways from this campaign, if you ask that then The first is the way they marketed to a whole new to their new target audience. In the past, Beard Oil was advertising to the older target audience that passed on the products to the younger generation, 40-60 year old market.ÂÂ   they switched their target market After assessing market trends to users who are in the range of 18-34 year range. This is much not so easier said than done. When switching up the market,ÂÂ   target market to this extent, our company needs to completely re-vamp its strategy that includes marketing strategy. One way that Beard Oil achieved this is by using a mix of the marketing skills andÂÂ   appeals that the younger generation responds well to. These appeals being humor, wittiness and sex. You might be wondering, why would our brand actually, why would we use a male sex symbol to a product that caters to male and if their target market young men? This is mostly because the research has shown that women purchase almost 70% of all male toiletry products. By using appeals this was much easier that are both male and female friendly, the new campaign that saw an impressive response allowing this and all the video to go viral almost immediately. The next takeaway from our brand Beard Oil is that, what they did once they and after launching the campaign. After the flood of responses that came in, Beard Oil decided to actually interact with their fans in the form of questions that were from and for the Beard Oil man. Thousands of questions were asked and almost 180 video responses by the Beard Oil man were created which included a very interesting thing, a marriage proposal andÂÂ   also frequent exchanges from celebrities like Ellen DeGeneres, Hritik, Demi Moore, Alysa Milano, and others. This kind of frequent interaction that our brand had actually decided and this is what gets people talking about your brand and also a major reason for the success of this campaign. Many companies and brands assume that once they have actually created a much successful advertisement or a new campaign, that the work is actually done. Wrong. It is so important to interact with viewers (as a response and feedback also) on social media platf orms like facebook and twitter if you want to create a very long lasting reaction that people will and should remember for a long time. To sum all of this up, human beings in a short attention spans. One minute they see a great advertisement and boom the next minute its forgotten. Half of the battle is about creating the effective advertisement that they recall but maybe the most challenging step is the way that you get people to remember it. Social media is a great platform to get feedback and respond to questions, build on the previous successes, and keep the intended brand imageÂÂ   fresh and create a new idea in the minds of the consumers. Results Over the past month, sales jumped over 55 percent and in this month, they rose a total of 107 percent as per the data. Recent sales figures from MarketA also show a lift for Beard Oil Face Wash products. The disclosure ofMarketA data, which is usually not made public and only provided to companies and also, came after a report in Brandweek whichÂÂ   cited MarketA data for the products that featured in the campaign, Blue Zone, AF Body Wash. Sales for Blue Zone hit $1.8 million for the four to six week period ended with 55 percent jump over the four-week period. MarketA data shows that the other four Beard Oil Body Wash products also show a lift. Overall sales for Beard Oil Body Wash rose 105 percent for mostly that period The sales figure that and the research data even the analysis from experts said its targeted to both sexes, Its targeted to people that are involved and who are attractive or really want to be attractive. A lot of people are buying Beard Oil now and it isnt because theyre young. On the engagement in front of the results, the campaign, which was enhanced by a new real-time component that has recently been introduced earlier this month also in which Mustafa personally and individually responded to blogger, facebook and Twitter-based comments which was astonishing for the viewers about the campaign via video, is also a clear success.

The Beginning of Victory :: Example Personal Narratives

The Beginning of Victory    As the music seeps through the air of the dark basement theater, my fingers begin to slide up the neck of my guitar. Instinct starts to take over. The notes flow through my veins, swim up the cables, and are flung into the sphere of energy that has formed around the small theater. The spotlight falls onto the closed eyelids of the audience as their steps coincide with the rhythmic beat of the improvisation. My mind slips away from the scene.    The freshly fallen snow clings to the limbs of the evergreen trees, forming a canopy over the path that winds its way up the mountainside behind my home. This is where I go when I need to think. As I hike up the narrow trail, I find solitude in nature. There are no houses to fill my view. There are no super-highways cutting through the middle of the path. Most of all, there are no people. A family of deer freezes to look at me in search of a place where the snow has not covered the grass. Further up the trail I stop to watch as two black squirrels chase each other up and around the skeleton of an aspen tree. Through a hole in the canopy the sun glistens off the snow and warms me. As I break out of the trees, I look up and see the sun perched alone in the sky with not one cloud to hide behind.    The band begins to slow the music and the rambunctious dancing turns to hypnotic swaying. A calm, almost mesmerizing jazz progression takes form, and with a slower, more sensuous feeling my body takes command of my instrument once more. I start to drift away again, but this time a different scene surfaces.    I take my usual seat on the rock outcropping that overlooks all of Eastern Colorado and take a very deep breath. As I look upon the city, I see the tops of the skyscrapers poking through the brown cloud of pollution. The entire valley is enveloped in this smog. To the South, where the clouds begin to dissipate, highways and houses flow over the land that animals and vegetation once inhabited. Urban sprawl is replacing nature. Even from this point high above the city, the sounds of cars roaring along the highway are intertwined with the magpie's call and blue-jay's song.

a rose for emily analysis Essay

In â€Å"A Rose For Emily†, Emily was the one who was portrayed as the victim. Her father was very controlling to the point where he wouldn’t let her decide who she could marry. She became so dependent on her father that when he died, she became a completely different person. She had no idea how to function in society as her own individual person. The one person she knew and loved was taken away from her. She was in fact â€Å"left alone, and a pauper† (Faulkner 30). Her father left her little money but a prestigious name, which meant that people in the town treated Emily differently. They did not make friends with her, not due to the fact that they did not like her, but because she came from a prestigious family. She would not pay for her taxes due to the loophole found by the town mayor. Essentially he had â€Å"invented the tale, to the effect that Miss Emily’s father had loaned money to the town, which the town preferred this way of repaying† (Faulkner 29). The townspeople did not go reach out to her and support her. As if it was karma due to the fact that she did not treat the townspeople with respect, she even gained and became poor. The townspeople understood â€Å"that with nothing left, she would have to cling to that which had robbed her as people will†(Faulkner 31). They did not hold it against her that she had trouble handling this situation. Emily is given the â€Å"respectful affection of a fallen monument†(Faulkner 28). See more: how to write an analysis paper When a man by the name of Homer showed up in her life and had actually taken interest in her she was very determined to stay with him forever. She was so shocked by his refusal to marry her, so she simply made it impossible for him to leave her. She made sure of it. â€Å"She will persuade him yet, because Homer himself had remarked – he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks’ Club – that he was not a marrying man.† (Faulkner 41). Emily had them both dressed up in wedding attire and then proceeded to poison him so that she could pretend they had been married. Emily had gone through something extremely horrible and could not cope with it whatsoever. She was somebody who had it all and then lost everything. If anyone else were put in her shoes and experienced the things she was going through, they too might also do something as crazy as what she did.

Polonium Facts - Element 84 or Po Polonium (Po or Element 84) is one of the radioactive elements discovered by Marie and Pierre Curie. This rare element has no stable isotopes. Its found in uranium ores and cigarette smoke and also occurs as a decay product of heavier elements. Although there arent many applications for the element, it is used to generate heat from radioactive decay for space probes. The element is used as a neutron and alpha source and in anti-static devices. Polonium has also been used as a poison to commit assassinations. Although the position of element 84 on the periodic table would lead to categorization as a metalloid, its properties are those of a true metal. buy custom Business Plan and Ideas essay

buy custom Business Plan and Ideas essay Business Ideas Find a better location for the bike shop after thoroughly studying the market and the customer requirements. Determine exactly which are my weaknesses and strengths and learn how to use them in attracting new clients. Find a way to pay off the start up loans - maybe start a garage sale or manufacture items that can be sold with small cash (bracelets, earrings and so on) Take a course in marketing and managements concepts. This will definitely help with discovering new strategies and ways to be successful. Read and become up-to-date with the newest business and finance related problems in the area. Look for a sponsor or investor in the company who would be available to pay parts of the loan. Put together a strong business plan and figure out the steps that I want to take to become successful. Talk with my friend and put him in theme with my new ideas. Find out if he wants to return to the board or find another person who might. Talk to family members and learn if they are fully aware and if they approve the entire business I am trying to start. See if my family members might like to be investors. Figure out my personal qualities and if they would help or affect my business. Find out ways to overcome possible knock-backs that might happen along the road in this business. Develop ways to advertise my business using smaller amounts of money (talk to the local radio station to mention my shop, create my own flyers and ask a friend or a family member to print them out for me, create a large banner and put it outside my shop) Make sure I study everything there is to know about bicycles, financing a shop, managing the money and investing them properly. Try to make contact with people in finance, marketing and management, who can help me with their expertise and money. Figure out where I can buy products of the same quality and with better process. Try to put together a bicycle repair service, as it might bring more customers to my shop to both repair their bicycles and buy new ones in case the old one are unsalvageable. I need to figure out my competition in the area and try to provide new products. I should concentrate on studying the market before resuming my business as I dont want to bring already existing products in my shop, at prices equal or higher than in others. Always keep in mind that since my shop can be considered as a new market, I canbring existing products with small prices at the beginning, and when it will be ready, I could introduce new products into my shop. Always aim for quality and not quantity or low prices. Customers will appreciate a good bike at a reasonable price rather than a cheap, but bad bike. Learn to study the reactions and behavior of the customer and figure out how to act according to them. Always ask what they need to buy a bicycle for and be prompt in coming with the perfect item to match their requirements. Learn everything there is to know about the already existing products in the shop and make sure I can answer quickly when someone asks me something about one of them. Analyze my competition, see which are their weak spots and try to combat them using these. Make sure I have all licenses I need for my business. Consider installing communication means inside the shop and make sure to tell people about it so that they can use it if they need assistance or information. Never operate my business outside my expertise or financial resources. Tell my friends about the store and ask them to spread the news around. Have a positive yet realistic attitude about the future of the business. If everything I have thought of goes as planned, I see my store prospering in the future, as more and more customers will come and ask for my services. I plan to bring new items to the store as soon as I see that I have success with the ones I am already selling. Employee Statement If my friend will agree to come back in business with me, we will be the owners of the shop. Our role will be to manage everything there is to manage in the store and make sure that it has profit. Also, each one of us, as co-owners, will have the right to hire or fire any employees, as long as the other co-owner agrees. Even though at the beginning we will be doing all the hard work, after a while, we will hire more and more people to help us with the business. We will have to hire a manager to guide the other employees and an assistant manager if more help is needed in this department. Depending on how much the business will grow, we will hire people who will be in charge with walking around the shop and making sure customers receive the attention and information needed. Last but not least, we will hire a security team which will patrol inside and outside of the shop to ensure our customers safety. Business Profile My bicycle selling business consists in a store meant for selling bikes of all kinds and sizes to customers interested in purchasing a healthy means of travel. At the moment, due to the large sums of money I need to pay to cover my start up loans, I hit a dead end. However, I am determined to turn around and find another way around this maze called a fresh business and reach the center of the labyrinth to claim the big prize. Economic Assessment In the area I live there are two more bicycle shops. This is inconvenient for my business but I will try to work it out. After studying the regional economy, I find that my business can flourish without problems here. Since more and more people choose the healthy way of travelling and bicycle is the best alternative of it. Nowadays, when cars are all around the cities, people have started to think more about their health. This is why I think that this region is perfect for my business. I have been in the business for three years and I have had moderate success. Due to the start up loans we had to pay, I and my friend cant say that we are completely happy with the results, this being the main reason why he backed out of the business. However, I trust that with this new business plan and ideas, I will manage to make this business more successful. Cash Flow Assessment In the three years since I have started this bicycle business, the sales has brought me moderate success. The main problem was the fact that I had to pay the start up loans every month, which left me with virtually no profit at all. This is an inconvenience which I hope will disappear thanks to my new business plan. I plan that in the future I will have a bigger profit because I want to find sponsors and investors to help me with the loans. Furthermore, after studying the market and the competition, I believe I have managed to figure out a way to be the most successful bike store in the region. Therefore, I believe that the cash flow in the following period will increase considerably. Final Statement Although at first it might seem difficult, I am sure that with a lot of hard work and ambition, I will manage to turn the small bicycle shop I own at the moment into a successful business. After all, my motto is: Bike is your way into a successful future! Buy custom Business Plan and Ideas essay

Environment cycles exist in a perfect state of unbalance and it’s only through interference by various elements that a state of instability becomes present thus leading to an endangering of both abiotic and biotic components within its existence (Elizabeth, 2012). A cycle in the environment basically refers to an act of transfer of a particular atom that follows another in a cycle and in the process waste products is eliminated thus leading to environmental stability. There are various environmental cycles that are present in the environment that include: carbon cycle –with carbon being the fourth most abundant element of the gaseous package of the environment. Carbon cycles take place through the ocean, land, atmosphere and the earth’s interior. ... Through decomposition of biological wastes by the involvement of microbes it also becomes possible for nitrogen to be released into the atmosphere. Human activity mainly involves the use of nitrogen as fertilizers (Gardner, 2011). Phosphorous cycle refers to the uptake of phosphorous by organisms. Rocks through the weathering process are that main producers of phosphorous in the environment and is mainly used by humans as fertilizers for their farm lands. Additionally water cycle simply refers to a process that makes it possible for water to be transferred from the atmosphere through condensation and its movement to the earth through precipitation after which it’s transferred to the normal atmosphere using basically the process of evaporation. In the first part of the report I will look at a more detailed understanding of the water cycle and focus on how human activities impact the process of water cycle in the environment (Elizabeth, 2010). Methodology The research will answe r the question of how the environmental process of the water cycle is impacted by various human activities. My research will involve the use of secondary data sources which will be through a review of literature on this topic from books, peer reviewed sources and electronic sources. Discussion Understanding the water cycle The water cycle is also commonly referred to as the hydrologic cycle to describe the transitional stages and processes that relate to the movement of water in the environment. Generally the global water cycle can be understood through a deeper review of nine major processes that form a basis for its movement. As a cycle, the water cycle has no start or conclusion and is basically referred to as an infinite continuous process. Water cycle takes into

The cylindrospermopsin alkaloids Literature review

The cylindrospermopsin alkaloids - Literature review Example CYN is a natural toxin which is usually produced by certain cyanobacteria species majorly Cylindrospermopsin raciborskii and Umezakia natans among others (Masten 2000). The presence of CYN in drinking or recreational water poses a serious environmental and health risk. CYN was initially isolated in 1992 following a suspected outbreak in Palm Island; Australia. Since its isolation and classification, various techniques have been used to isolate, detect, analyze and purify Cylindrospermopsin (Moore, Ohtani and Runnegar 1992). Some of the common techniques include; High Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Photodiode Array Detector (HPLC-PDA), Enzyme Linked Immuno-sorbent Assay (ELISA), NMR/Mass Spectrometry (MS), filtration and adsorption techniques among others Masten 2000). This paper shall describe how to grow CYN using bioreactor, analysis using ELISA and HPLC, purification of CYN and analysis using NMR/MS. Detection of Cylindrospermopsin in surface water is important sin ce it acts as the major source of drinking and recreational water for a large percentage of people throughout the world. The Cylindrospermopsins should be constantly removed from water to prevent contamination from toxins which are known to cause hepatotoxicity among other toxic effects (Fastner et al. 2003).Cylindrospermopsin is produced by various cyanobacteria species commonly known as blue-green-algae which are mostly found in fresh water. Some variants of Cylindrospermopsin raciborskii commonly found in U.S., Australia and Hungary, Umezakia natans isolated in Japan and Aphanizomenon ovalisporum found in Israel and Australia produce Cylindrospermopsin (Fastner et al. 2003). Human poisoning which occurs through ingestion of water or food contaminated with Cylindrospermopsin producing strains is the most common problem associated with the toxins. It has been suggested that toxicity by Cylindrospermopsins is majorly mediated through inhibition of protein synthesis which causes loss of liver functioning leading to death of cells. Use of a bioreactor in growing CYN Bioreactors can be used in the growth and isolation of CYN due to their ability to allow controlled growth of the organism under specific conditions. A bioreactor can be used to characterize CYN in terms of its relative biological and chemical components while allowing reproducible generation of the target compound. Bioreactors enable the proliferation of the CYN cells by controlling the environment under which the cells are cultured. Typically, a bioreactor for CYN should alloy control of certain environmental conditions that favor the growth of the organism. Using a bioreactor, conditions like oxygen concentration, temperature, stress and PH as well as sterility are maintained during the procedure (McMahon et al. 2008). The proliferation of CYN cells is also facilitated by the availability of essential nutrients alongside the removal of harmful toxins that can inhibit the growth of the cells. Biore actors enable different operations to be undertaken including fed-batch, batch and continuous cultivation (Choo et al. 2007). Continuous perfusion allows the growth of CYN cells under stable and controlled environmental situations. Isolation of CYN using charcoal filtration method Studies have demonstrated that CYN can be isolated successfully through adsorption techniques utilizing various sediments. Powdered Activated Charcoal (PAC) has been found effective in removing CYN from
